submission deadline EXTENDED TO nov. 15, 2017

Call for Papers

GURT 2018 is seeking proposals for individual papers, posters, and colloquia from across approaches to discourse analysis that address any of the field’s various topical and theoretical foci, types and sources of data, methodological questions, and practical applications.

Submission Guidelines

All submissions should include the following:

  • Author(s) contact information and other details:

o Full name of principal presenter and contact information: affiliation, telephone, mailing address, email. All return correspondence will be to this individual only.

o Full names, affiliations, and email addresses of co-presenter(s) if any.

  • Abstract details:

o Presentation title (15 word limit).

o Abstract (300 word limit for individual posters and papers; 300 words for Colloquia; colloquia submissions must also include an abstract for each paper, up to 300 words). The abstract should provide an extended description of the presentation for committee review.

o Presentation Summary (50 word limit): A brief description to be included in the conference program.

o Please provide 3 to 5 keywords to assist the organizers in assigning reviewers.

o Abstract should be prepared for anonymous review (no reference to the author or the author’s home institution in the abstract).

Proposals are due by 15 November 2017. Click here to submit your abstract.

To maximize participation opportunities at GURT 2018, each individual is allowed only one single-authored contribution and one co-authored contribution. (Presenting a paper, presenting a poster, organizing a colloquium, and serving as a colloquium discussant each counts as one contribution.)

Please note the following important change (as of October 25): The organizer of a colloquium may either present a paper or serve as a discussant in his or her colloquium and not exceed the participation limit. (We are grateful to queries by colloquium organizers that pointed out this unintended limitation.)

Individual Papers

  • Papers and posters should be formal presentation that draw on theories and methods of one or more approaches to discourse analysis.
  • Individual papers will be presented within a 20-minute period, plus 10 minutes for discussion.
  • Posters will be displayed for a 2 hour block.

Colloquia

Colloquia involve the presentation of multiple prepared papers on a related topic or theme, followed by structured discussion of those papers. They are typically scheduled for 2 hour blocks. If more time is needed, organizers can submit a series of single sessions (i.e., Part I, Part II); these will be individually reviewed.

Please note the following important change (as of October 25): The 2 hour block time has been extended to 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Colloquium organizers should submit an abstract for the colloquium (of up to 300 words) and include both an abstract (up to 300 words) and short summary (50 words) for each paper. Please indicate the schedule for participants, with time allocated for opening and closing remarks, presentations, discussion, and audience response. Organizers may choose to participate in the session as a presenter or discussant.

Review Criteria

Review criteria include promise of a novel and productive contribution to the field of discourse analysis; clarity and evidence of a well-organized, engaging presentation; and relevance to the GURT 2018 theme. For colloquia, criteria also include a clearly indicated schedule of activities, with an appropriate amount of time for discussion and audience participation.
