Location
- Georgetown University is located in northwest Washington, DC, just across the Potomac River from Rosslyn, Virginia. The university’s main campus (the GURT 2012 conference site) and our two recommended hotels are located within the neighborhood of Georgetown.
- The closest MetroRail stops to Georgetown are “Rosslyn” and “Foggy Bottom” on the Orange and Blue Lines and “Dupont Circle” on the Red Line (MetroRail map).
- The closest MetroBus lines include G2, D2, D6, and 38B. If traveling by taxi, the driver should be asked to go to 37th and O Street NW (Georgetown University main gate).
By Air
- There are three major airports in the Washington area: Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and BWI (Baltimore Washington International) Airport. Dulles Airport is the area’s largest airport and has the most flights, especially for international travelers. National Airport is the closest to Georgetown University’s main campus. BWI Airport is the farthest from DC (it is close to Baltimore), but some airlines offer cheaper fares going there.
Ground Transportation from Dulles Airport
- MetroBus 5A: MetroBus 5A is an express bus going from Dulles Airport to Rosslyn MetroRail Station and L’Enfant Plaza (downtown DC). The fare is approximately $4. The bus leaves right outside the airport on the lower level (in Section E). To get to Georgetown University, get off the 5A at Rosslyn, which is the nearest subway stop to Georgetown. From Rosslyn, there are buses and taxis that take you to the Georgetown area (see below – Public Transportation around DC).
- SuperShuttle: SuperShuttle is a shared van-ride system. The fare is approximately $30 to Georgetown main campus for the first passenger in your group and $7 for each additional passenger, excluding tip (check their website for price updates). The ticket counter is located on the lower level (Ground Transportation/Shared Van Rides). No reservation is needed leaving from the airport. To take SuperShuttle back to the airport, you can use their online reservation system or call the phone number available on their website to make a reservation.
- Washington Flyer Taxi: This is the only authorized taxi company for Dulles Airport. It is approximately $50 one-way to downtown. Please follow the signs inside the airport.
- Washington Flyer Coach (+ MetroRail + MetroBus): This coach service takes you to West Falls Church Metro Station (Orange Line). Their ticket counter is on the upper level, Door 4. Regular fare is approximately $9 ($15 round trip). Once you arrive at West Falls Church Metro Station, take the Orange Line (direction: New Carrollton) to Rosslyn, which is the nearest subway stop to Georgetown. From Rosslyn, there are buses and taxis that take you to Georgetown (see below – Public Transportation around DC).
Ground Transportation from National Airport
- MetroRail + MetroBus: MetroRail’s Blue Line stops adjacent to Terminals B and C at National Airport. To get to Georgetown, take the Blue Line to Rosslyn (direction: Largo Town Center). From Rosslyn, there are buses and taxis that take you to the Georgetown area (see below – Public Transportation around DC).
- Taxi Services: There is a designated taxi line outside the airport. Please be advised that Washington, DC cabs operate on a meter system since 2008. A ride for one passenger between National Airport and Georgetown is about $18. For fares, please check the DC Taxicab Commission.
- SuperShuttle: SuperShuttle is a shared van-ride system. The fare is around $25 from National Airport to Georgetown University. No reservation is needed leaving from the airport. To take SuperShuttle back to the airport, you can use their online reservation system or call the phone number available on their website to make a reservation.
Ground Transportation from BWI (Baltimore-Washington International) Airport
- MetroBus B30: MetroBus B30: There is an express MetroBus (B30) running between BWI and the Greenbelt Metro station. The fare is approximately $4. There are two bus stops at BWI: one is located on the lower level of the International Pier and the other stop is located on the lower level of Concourse A/B. From Greenbelt Metro station, you can take the Green Line to downtown. Change to the Orange or Blue line at L’Enfant Plaza (direction: Vienna on the Orange; Franconia/Springfield on the Blue) if you want to continue to Rosslyn, or change to the Red Line at Gallery Place/ Chinatown (direction: Shady Grove) if you want to continue to Dupont Circle. From Rosslyn or Dupont Circle, buses and taxis will take you to the Georgetown area (see also below – Public Transportation around DC).
- MARC trains: The Maryland Transit Authority runs MARC trains from BWI train station to downtown DC destinations, including Union Station. Fares are around $8 (check http://www.mtamaryland.com for schedules and price updates). From Union Station, take the Red Line to Dupont Circle (direction: Shady Grove). From Dupont Circle, buses (G2, D2 and D6) and taxis will take you to the Georgetown area (see below – Public Transportation around DC).
- Amtrak: Amtrak trains take you from BWI train station to Union Station in downtown DC. There are free shuttles running from the airport to the BWI train station. For Amtrak schedules and information call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or go to http://www.amtrak.com. The fare is approximately $16 (check their website for price updates).
- SuperShuttle: SuperShuttle is a shared van-ride system. Their ticket counter is located between bag claims 6 and 7 at BWI Airport. The fare is around $30 from BWI to Georgetown University (check their web site for price updates). No reservation is needed leaving from the airport. To take SuperShuttle back to the airport, you can use their online reservation system or call the phone number available on their website to make a reservation.
By Train
- Trains from around the US arrive directly downtown at Union Station. In addition to the designated taxi line outside the building, Union Station has a MetroRail stop (Red Line) in its basement.
- To get to Georgetown from Union Station, take the Red Line (destination: Shady Grove) to Dupont Circle. From Dupont Circle, MetroBuses G2, D2 and D6 and taxis will take you to the Georgetown area (see also below – Public Transportation around DC).
By Bus
- The main bus terminal in Washington, DC is located at 1005 1st Street NE, close to Union Station (10 minutes walk). Union Station has a MetroRail stop (Red Line).
- To get to Georgetown University, take the Red Line to Dupont Circle (direction: Shady Grove). From Dupont Circle, Metro Buses G2, D2 and D6 and taxis will take you to the Georgetown area. However, if you arrive late in the day, we strongly recommend you take a taxi to get to Georgetown from the bus terminal and avoid walking around the area at night.
Public Transportation around DC
- All the MetroBuses and MetroRail trains mentioned above are operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Please check their web site for maps, schedules, fares, a trip planner, and other visitor information.
Getting to Georgetown University from Rosslyn, Virginia
- MetroBus 38B (direction: Farragut Square) takes you across the Key Bridge to the stop ‘M Street and 34th Street’. This is the closest stop to Georgetown University. The fare is $1.70. The Georgetown University main gates are at the intersection of 37th and O Streets.
- The Circulator also takes you from Rosslyn to ‘M Street and Wisconsin Ave (Wisconsin Ave is between 33rd and 31st Streets)’. The Georgetown University main gates are at the intersection of 37th and O Streets. The fare is $1. See their website for more details.
Getting to Georgetown University from Dupont Circle
- MetroBuses G2, D2 and D6 will take you to the Georgetown area, with MetroBus G2 stopping right outside the Georgetown University main gates (37th and O Streets).
GUTS Shuttle
- On weekdays and Saturdays, Georgetown University runs a shuttle service from Rosslyn and Dupont Circle to campus. See “Public Transportation” on the Campus page or visit the GUTS website at http://otm.georgetown.edu/guts/.
