Call for Papers
GURT2017 is seeking proposals for individual papers, posters, and colloquia that deal with any aspect of variable properties in language and how they may have originated either in children during language acquisition or in adults at some point in their lives. One goal of the meeting is to change the discourse on variable properties, with more emphasis on how properties may vary differently in different domains and how they might be acquired by young children or by adults. Therefore, we particularly encourage participation by junior scholars (graduate students and postdocs) and will provide financial support for such people giving presentations and coming from out of town; we will also host a lunch on the first day for those scholars and the invited plenary speakers.
Submission Guidelines
All submissions should include the following:
- Author(s) contact information and other details:
o Full name of principal presenter and contact information: affiliation, telephone, mailing address, email. All return correspondence will be to this individual only.
o Full names, affiliations, and email addresses of co-presenter(s) if any.
- Abstract details:
o Presentation title (15 word limit).
o Abstract (300 word limit for individual posters and papers, 400 words for Colloquia): Extended description of the presentation for committee review.
o Presentation Summary (50 word limit): A brief description to be included in the conference program.
o Abstract should be prepared for anonymous review (no reference to the author or the author’s home institution in the abstract).
o Proposals are due by 31 October 2016.

Individual Papers
- Papers should be formal presentations on a topic related to variable properties and their origin.
- Papers are presented by one or more authors within a 20-minute period, plus 10 minutes for discussion.
Colloquia
- Colloquia entail the presentation of multiple prepared papers on a related topic or theme, followed by structured discussion of those papers.
- Colloquia proposals should be clear about the overall theme/topic, objectives, and participants involved (e.g., the organizer, paper presenters, discussants).
- One of the main goals of this format is to foster dialogue among attendees, and time should be allocated for audience discussion (1- or 2-hour time slots).
Review Criteria
Proposals will be reviewed by a committee of linguists for:
- Relevance to the GURT2017 theme.
- Expectation of a novel, interesting contribution to our understanding of variable properties and their origin.
- Clarity and evidence of a well-organized, engaging presentation.
- For colloquia: a clearly indicated schedule of activities, with appropriate amount of time for discussion and audience participation.
